An electronic engineer who takes a holistic approach to bringing ideas to life. From initial requirements to the final product: system architecture, custom hardware design, and efficient firmware development, delivered as complete, tailored solutions.

work

FPGA Design & Embedded Systems Engineer

Custom hardware and software for the reception and decoding of RF signals.

  • Designed and implemented digital signal processing pipelines on an AMD (Xilinx) Zynq 7000 FPGA.
  • Developed optimized firmware and low-level routines in C for the Zynq embedded processor and the data processing system.
  • Built robust Python interfaces abstracting the low-level C routines and FPGA functionality, simplifying control and data acquisition for system-level applications.

Electronics Engineer & IC Designer

Designed advanced technologies while managing multiple high-complexity projects.

  • Invented a novel (patent-pending) superconductive logic family, achieving up to 30% improvement in scalability and 25% reduction in power consumption.
  • Designed IC layouts and performed tape-outs using KLayout.
  • Developed a Verilog-A model of a superconductive transistor and ran simulations in Cadence SPECTRE and Virtuoso.
  • Designed a custom low-noise wide-band amplifier and a digital signal acquisition system based on an STM32 microcontroller.
  • Wrote Python for automated measurements, layout cell generation, data processing and plotting.
  • Managed Linux and Windows workstations (Red Hat 8, Windows Server 2022).

Embedded Engineer

Took innovative ideas from concept to finished product.

  • Designed and led development of a novel focusing mechanism for lithography machines, including mechanical design, SPICE circuit simulation, and PCB layout and routing.
  • Engineered a laser beam profiling machine for beam shaping, improving beam sharpness by 20%.
  • Developed firmware in C and Assembly for single board computers, STM32, AVR and PIC microcontrollers; software in C++ with the Qt framework; and Windows DLLs for lithography surface profiling and focus tracking.
  • Maintained and updated lithography machines on site.

Inventor and DIYer

A childhood habit that never stopped: there is always a project on the bench. Gadgets built around microcontrollers (a Nixie tube wristwatch among the favourites), analog audio effects for guitar, videogames and custom software for controlling scientific instrumentation, and full characterization systems such as the memristor characterizer used at the University of Palermo and featured in Solid-State Electronics.
